Project Description
Assist in the development of an Over The Horizon radar model utilizing pure signal processing to determine target range and velocity from dynamic spectrums without prior knowledge. Current Capability Gaps in OTH Radar Simulation: Over-The-Horizon (OTH) radar systems operate in a highly complex, dynamic environment where the ionosphere acts as a refracting medium. Currently, we possess foundational modeling components: a baseline ionosphere electron density model, a Deterministic Ionosphere Ray (DIR) tracer, and a phase screen model to simulate small-scale plasma irregularities and scintillation. However, a critical capability gap exists in synthesizing these components into an end-to-end, physics-based radar performance model. Pure ray tracing provides geometric paths and group delay but fails to fully capture complex wave propagation effects—such as diffraction, forward scattering, and dynamic frequency dispersion—necessary for accurate spectrum characterization in a turbulent medium. Assist the United States Air Force in pushing the edge of this technology to develop the necessary digital twins for this problem set.
