Overview
The Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP) is a funding and professional development opportunity through the Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry office to assist students in any major or research area with financial needs while being involved in an undergraduate research project. URAP is a competitive program and funds approximately 60 students each year, across a summer program and a fall/spring program. Students are responsible for working with a faculty mentor to develop their research project proposal. In addition to their faculty-mentored research activities, URAP students participate in a professional development curriculum organized by UR&CI staff.
In order to be selected for URAP, students must not have received any other type of funding for their research project, including grants or paid research employment. URAP funds are distributed as student employee wages. All applicants must be eligible for student employee positions at Ohio State. Note that you cannot hold a student employee position at the same time as a staff position (such as a PCA at the Med Center). Additionally, students taking classes during their URAP term cannot work full-time while class is in session and will be limited to 28 hours/week. Please consult the University's Student Employment Policy by clicking this link, if you have questions about your eligibility.
Application Details
Current URAP terms have closed. Please check back in January for the Summer 2025 URAP application link.
The URAP application process now takes place in Workday. Please log in with your OSU email address. You will need to compile the following documents into a single PDF document and save your application as follows: "Last Name_First Name_URAP24." This must be uploaded to your application in Workday. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Application Materials:
Please assemble your application materials in the following order:
- Personal Statement that addresses why you are doing research, what is important to you about your project, etc. (maximum of one single-spaced page)
- Project description and overview of student project responsibilities (maximum of two single-spaced pages)
- Timeline for project (general overview and goals)
- IRB application status (if applicable)
- Description of prior, current or pending research funding support (if applicable)
- Note: If any discrepancies or omissions of funding are found after hiring, the student may be terminated from their URAP position.
- Advising report (found on Buckeyelink, used to verify enrollment and graduation)
- Name of your faculty research mentor and their Ohio State email address. UR&CI staff will contact your faculty research mentor to provide a letter of support.
Currently, URAP students are capped at a maximum of 456 hours during the URAP appointment, and all positions will terminate at the end of the program term, regardless of how many hours have been logged. Students will participate in all aspects of the URAP curriculum, including submitting progress reports as directed by UR&CI throughout the term. Students will also present their research in a UR&CI-hosted or regional campus forum.
