Project Description
We study oral streptococci and strive to define the mechanisms by which these species colonize the oral cavity and cause infective endocarditis. The laboratory is a supportive but challenging environment where we aim to provide an educational experience to help students develop skills required for a future in scientific research. Students will learn a range of techniques including bacterial mutagenesis, PCR, DNA preparations, and various biochemical assays. In addition to technical skills, we will help students learn to critically evaluate manuscripts, present their work orally and in written form, and develop experimental plans. Students will be expected to present their work at local meetings. Previous research experience is not required; however, the successful applicant will be energetic, keen to learn, logical, and detail oriented. The student will be responsible for their own project under direct supervision of a research assistant and Dr. King.
