Project Description
How do parents decide whether an educational video is worth showing to their child or recommending to another parent? This project uses eye tracking to study those decisions in real families visiting COSI, the Center of Science and Industry.
Undergraduate research assistants will help conduct a field study at COSI in which parents view educational media while their eye movements are recorded. Students will gain hands-on experience with eye-tracking technology, experimental research, and data collection outside a traditional university lab. Research assistants will be trained to operate the equipment, recruit and interact with participants, run study sessions, ensure high-quality data collection, and help organize research data.
This is a particularly good opportunity for students interested in psychology, communication, education, child development, cognitive science, media, or human behavior who want experience seeing how scientific research works in a real-world setting.

Required Applicant Information
Please send a resume and a short paragraph explaining why you are interested in the project. In your email, please also indicate whether you would be able to arrange transportation to COSI for scheduled research shifts. No previous research experience is necessary.
Required or Desired Skills
No previous eye-tracking or research experience is required. We are looking for students who are reliable, organized, comfortable interacting with members of the public, and attentive to detail. Because the study takes place at COSI rather than on campus, students must also be able to arrange their own transportation to COSI for scheduled research shifts.
Students who drive their own vehicle will have parking costs covered by the research project.
An interest in children, families, educational media, psychology, communication, or cognitive science is especially welcome.
