Project Description
We are cellular neuroscientists studying the cytoskeleton of nerve cells. This project uses human induced pluripotent stem cells which we maintain in cell culture and differentiate into motor neurons. The neurons are derived from healthy individuals or individuals with a neurodegenerative disease that involves the cytoskeleton of the cells. The student will learn to culture and image these cells using transmitted light and fluorescence microscopy. The student will also learn to transfect the cells with fluorescent proteins and image the proteins in living cells (“live cell imaging”). This is a basic cell biology project with relevance to human disease.
Additional Information
We are seeking students who are interested in laboratory research and in exploring research/graduate school as a potential career path. Students can volunteer or register for course credit. Paid summer research is also an option for students that work in the lab during the academic year. The number of hours a week and schedule is flexible, depending on what other classes the student has. Students who are motivated and do well have the opportunity to continue in the lab and work towards poster presentations, a senior thesis, and/or publication.
