Project Description
This study follows children from ages 3 to 5 and examines their media use and language skills. Beyond how much media children use overall, data collection includes information about how much children use media with adults, how much children use interactive (apps/games) versus noninteractive (TV/video) media, and how much children use educational media. These factors may influence the impact of media use on language development.
First, students will work with project staff to conduct home visits to assess children’s language development and document families’ media practices. Second, students will gain skills in cleaning quantitative data, coding parent-child interactions from video, and transcribing child language using established lab protocols. Finally, if of interest, more senior students will have the opportunity to work directly with the Principal Investigator to conduct data analysis to address their own questions of interest within the larger project and present on their findings at local and regional conferences.
