Project Description
This opening is for an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Torrelles lab. Our lab primarily studies Tuberculosis (TB), focusing on the lung microenvironment and its role in mediating host-pathogen interactions. We research how comorbidities such as aging, diabetes, and HIV infection drives host susceptibility to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) and other respiratory pathogens. We also study drug resistant TB, developing novel diagnostics for drug susceptibility testing in low-resource settings as well as investigating the mechanisms of drug resistance related to M.tb cell envelope biochemistry. The Undergraduate Research Assistant will receive training and mentorship by senior members of the lab and support this research by fulfilling duties such as: lab maintenance and organization, preparation of supplies (reagents, media, etc.), data collection, and data analysis. The Undergraduate Research Assistant will have the opportunity to gain valuable laboratory experience and develop skills related to biomedical research techniques, reading scientific literature, critical thinking, and science communication.
