Project Description
We are currently conducting a research project to investigate how bed bugs spread across urban neighborhoods in Columbus, Ohio, and to identify socioeconomic factors that contribute to infestation patterns. Bed bugs are a growing public health issue, particularly in underserved communities where infestations exacerbate health and financial burdens. To address this, we are collecting bed bug samples from homes in six neighborhoods and analyzing them through genetic and socioeconomic methods.
We are looking for a student to help with our field and laboratory work. Specifically, the student will assist by: (1) helping collect and catalog bed bug samples from residences across Columbus; (2) performing molecular lab work, including DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis to genotype samples; and (3) organizing and compiling socioeconomic data for analysis.
The student will be responsible for maintaining a lab notebook, carrying out field and wet lab protocols with moderate oversight, working carefully and consistently, and communicating updates and issues to Dr. Seun Oladipupo, Principal Investigator.

Required or Desired Skills
Strong organizational skills are required to ensure that data, samples, etc. are recorded and stored properly. Experience in a wet lab setting is preferred, though not essential – training for all protocols will be provided. Applicants should also possess a reasonable level of hand-eye coordination as is necessary to manipulate small insects and execute molecular biology protocols (i.e., pipetting).
